VIDEO RELEASE !

Ottobre 27, 2015 3320 Views

I’m not a writer, not a photographer nor a video-maker.

But I had fun mixing this little thing up.
If you look at this “video”, just one suggestion I would like to give: PUT THE VOLUME OUT LOUD!
🙂

🙂

INTROSPECTION

Settembre 21, 2015 2489 Views

Days 50 – 51 – 52, Naxos (ENG – ITA)

Three introspection days, in Naxos.

Bad stuff.
Maybe for the weird climate of these days.
Maybe for casual meetings that affected me deeply.
Maybe for I’m feeling that the adventure is coming to an end soon.
Maybe just cause I forced myself to talk to me again.
But well, I was feeling some kind of melancholic lately.

I should have saved one introspective day, but today I did it: I missed the ferry.

image

The boat Express Skopelitis links almost everyday Naxos to Amorgos, touching on the way all the “small Cyclades”: Iraklia, Schinoussa, Kufounissi and Dhonoussa.

I was supposed to leave at 14 to Dhonoussa.

I get to the harbour in perfect timing, glad to see how skilled I became in managing minutes.

13.30: I’m sitting in a bar, sipping a frappè in a plastic glass – still a little bit stuck in my thoughts – looking from time to time at the sea awaiting the boat.

13.55: nothing.
Still no boat approaching.
It’s strange, they are quite always on time.
“It should be cause of the big waves“, I think within myself.
Bring the glass to my lips, enjoying the wind, breathing salt.

13.58: zero.

14.00: I’m still looking at the sea, calm like an angel. I don’t mind if the boat is late, there is no big deal waiting for me in the new island.
I get drowsy, slowly drinking my frappè.
A look at the harbour, at the people passing by, at the small fishermen boats.
One of them captures my attention, 100 meters away from me. It’s the only one that is moving. Its engine just started to eat the water.
I stare at it while it goes, a stupid smile under my nose.

On the side: Express Skopelitis.

As I discover that it was there since two hours my frappè is already a spot on the ground.

At least I’m lucky cause Maragas camping is still there, cause the wind cleared again the sky and a blue sunset on Paros, cause wine exists and I have a great book with me:

” The first thing is to be in front of a beautiful landscape; then everything can be solved, life can start. “

Or re-start.
Tomorrow I’ll see where to go.
Introspection is over.

Tre giorni di introspezione, fermo a Naxos.

Brutta roba.

13.55: nulla.
Non si avvista alcuna imbarcazione. Nessuna sirena in lontananza.
Strano.

È l’unica in movimento.

O ri-cominciare.
Domani vedrò dove andare.
L‘introspezione è finita.

APEIRANTHOS, FILOTI and DEMETRA TEMPLE

Settembre 18, 2015 3243 Views

Day 49, Naxos (ENG – ITA)

After almost a week asleep, today I bring on pedaling again, and hardly.

Catch again the bus that brought me to conquer the Mount Zás, but this time till Apeiranthos.

The guide book says that it shows cretese influences and gave birth to one of the first Greek prime ministers (Petros Protopapadakis, executed in 1922).
“What the f***!” I think.

I rememberAngeliki suggested me to go there for the village itself and the local gastronomy.
I find it delicious, like the grilled rooster I had for lunch.

image

image

Than 8 kms to reach Filoti, another small gem in a green valley.
But it’s 3 o’clock and it’s really hot, so I decide to visit Demetra’s Temple, 10 kms far away it.

image

A centuries throwback. I stay there around one hour, surrounded just by dry fields, ancient stones and cows.

The vision of a Venus wakes me up, silent in her blue dress and in her thoughts.
I seems to me I always knew her.
She smiles at me. I smile back.

I’m tired and think about asking her a lift, but I don’t do that.
Maybe I miss the chance to know a goddess, but I’ll meet her again in my dreams.

15 kms separate me from Plaka.
They will be my purgatory.
And my redemption.

Day 48, Naxos (ENG – ITA)

Last days summary.

I didn’t post regularly only because I came back to places I already visited.
Hanging around with friends, the travel turned more into a holiday.

First in Paros with Alexia and Marco, then in Naxos with Davide, Federica and Isabelle.

image

Again at the Golden Beach, in Pipèri and Piso Alykì (Paros), Agia Anna and Plaka (Naxos).

image

Less pictures, pedaling and unknown places, but more talking, laughing and beers.
Way more beers.

In between, a rented car in Paros – with Brompton in the back just in case – the queen of the Greek salads (by Manolis in Alykì) and a pirate Juventus in Manchester.

image

Now in Naxos. I’m starting to feel some kind of tired.
Few more islands left to visit. The small Cyclades, maybe Amorgos, maybe Anafi.

The sun runs faster, the Meltemi scratches at evening, silence at night sometimes makes me deaf.

The weather is changing, and me with him.
But I’m at peace.

Like this song (Vitalie Rotaru – Digital Feelings).

I can understand now what Seneca intended when he wrote: “Here is a great thing: being weak like a man and quiet like a god“.

In a little while I’ll start thinking about going “back home“.

A Naxos ora.

CHRONICLES FROM A DREAM

Settembre 4, 2015 2526 Views

Day 35, Naxos (ENG – ITA)

(some things are even true, guess which ones)

image

6.30: a barking dog as awakening.

7.10: wait for the sunrise behind Mount Zás (or Zeus).

7.20: back in tent. Sleep again but wake up immediately.

8.00: swim, fake exercises on the beach for an hour.

9.00: long breakfast with feet in the sand by Vanghe (Vanghelis).

10.10: ask the camping lady which bus lines I have to take to reach the beginning of the path to Mount Zás.
She warns me from the hallucinations I could face if I try it under the heavy sun.
10.35: step on the first bus to Hora.

11.00: change bus, taking the Filoti / Agia Marina connection. No time to buy some food. I’ll do it in Agia Marina.
The bus is overloaded. Beautiful humanity all around me. I’m pushed against the central door.

11.10: in a small village close to Hora a obsidian-eyed blonde angel comes in.
11.15: the driver turns suddenly. The blonde angel almost falls in my arms.
11.17: Angeliki (that’s her name) smiles at me and gives me a chewing gum. I ask myself if I smell onions.
11.18: Angeliki keeps smiling at me. I start talking. She is going to visit Apeiranthos village. She smiles again.
11.19: fall in love with Angeliki.
11.20: Angeliki comes closer. She kisses me. We make love for half an hour.

11.50: say goodbye to Angeliki, stepping down in Agia Marina. Find out it’s not a pueblo, but just a church. I don’t have food (badass).
Forget Angeliki. Prepare my Brompton to drive me again 2 km till the beginning of the path.

12.00: enchain it and start walking.

12.30: the lady was right, it’s super hot. Drink a lot.
Seems to me I catch a satyr between the stones.
Think I should have joined Angeliki in Apeiranthos.

13.00: reach the roof of Zeus’s Summer Palace. 1004 Mt. Cyclades’s top. Only ravens and bleeding stones. The view is oneiric. I can see almost all the islands I’ve been so far. Those 7 km which connect Hora to Plaka are shorter than a span. Contemplate Silence and ravens flight.

13.05: Zeus arrives and greats me, confiding he comes here only between 1 pm and 2 pm, when nobody is around.

13.30: rest myself under a lonely tree. Start writing this post, the satyr helping me.

14.00: look for my Ikran to fly me to the bicycle, but cannot find him. So I get lost in the hill and roll down to where I left it.

15.00: before jumping on my Brompton I give my half empty bottle of water to an English couple clearly in crisis.

15.30: in few minutes I’m in Filoti. The satyr turns into a huge club sandwich. I eat it all. Finish the post.

16.00: finally wake up.
Think I just dreamed everything.

No. Impossible.
I’m still in Filoti.
30 km from here to the camping.
But it’s almost only downhill.

And I have a bicycle.

image

image

7.20: torno in tenda.

Mi posiziono attaccato all’uscita di centro.

11.18: Angeliki continua a sorridermi. Inizio a parlarle. Sorride.
11.19: mi innamoro di Angeliki.
11.20: Angeliki si avvicina a me.

13.30: mi riposo bevendo acqua all’ombra dell’unico albero che c’è.

No, non è così.
Sono ancora a Filoti.
30 km da qui al campeggio.
Ma è quasi tutta discesa.

E io ho una bicicletta.

Day 34, Naxos (ITA – ENG)

Day 34 is like day 16.

Tomorrow I would like to reach the top of Mount Zas, Cyclades highest point.
So today I pay my tribute to Seneca, Dante and the retaliation law recharging myself at sea level.

Apart washing my Brompton and swimming till the small island that sleeps 2 kms away from Plaka beach, I live all my day like a kid.

Breakfast at sea level.
Exercises at sea level.
Sun at sea level.
Red nose at sea level.
Book at sea level.
Sand castles at sea level.
Gyros at sea level.
Nap at sea level.
Grapes at sea level.
Icecream at sea level.
Crosswords at sea level.
Sunset at sea level.

The dinner … even the dinner will be at sea level.

Tomorrow I’ll go up.

BETWEEN CULTURE, HISTORY AND MYTH

Settembre 2, 2015 2561 Views

Day 33, Naxos (ITA – ENG)

Oggi è giusto che parli la guida.

image

image

image

Today I let the guide write for me.

“When the ferry brings you to Naxos City you can immediately notice that this is a very special place, even only for the particular kàstro.
This is the island where venetian Marco Sanudo founded the city and settled the Aegean Duchy in XIII century.

At first glance you would think that all the city life takes place around the crowded seafront.
But don’t let it fool you: there is even more in the secondary narrow roads close to Boùrgo, the ancient citadel.

On the long embankment built in the northern part to protect the harbour, there is a street that connects the city to Palàtia isle; according to the legend, Dionysus induced Theseus to leave here Ariadne on the way back home from Crete.
The famous rocky Portàra that welcomes visitors since 2500 years was a part of a temple to Apollo, built in 530 a.C due to tyrant Lygdami but never finished.”

Though I think the legend is wrong.

It was Ariadne who wanted to get rid of Theseus and begged to be left here.
It cannot be the contrary.

HALF DAYS

Settembre 1, 2015 2155 Views

Day 32, Naxos (ITA – ENG)

A Naxos ho un problema.
Un serio problema: ho a disposizione solo mezze giornate.
Dalle 15 fino a sera, più o meno.

image

image

Alle 15 poi arriva l’ora della Brompton.

Ieri verso sud, oggi verso nord.
Verso Hora / Naxos city.

Seppur in poche ore riesco comunque a, nell’ordine:

image

image

image

In Naxos I have to face a problem.

A very serious one: I got only half days.
From 15 to evening, more or less.

The rest half – from 7/8 to 15 – must be for Plaka sea.
I mean, not doing it would be a terrible crime.

Around 15 comes the Brompton time.

Yesterday southward, today northward.
To Hora / Naxos city.

But even if in few hours I manage to:
– swim in Agia Anna bay
– climb to Agios Prokòpios promontory
– visit InViaggi village
– get involved by chance into a darts tournament
– win the tournament
– indulge into the wind in Hora bay, surrounded by windsurfers
– pedal close to some cormorants laying in a small lake close to a sandy road
– walk to Apollo Temple
– look at amazing Naxos City from Apollo Gate
– make up my mind immediately tomorrow’s half day will be for sure in Naxos City

NAXOS IS A B…EACH

Agosto 31, 2015 2355 Views

Day 31, Naxos (ITA – ENG)

Sembra infinita.

image

” Continua ancora un poco, fino all’altro promontorio là … non sembra lontano …“.
Mi assecondo. Proseguo.

Ora asfalto, ora sabbia, ora sterrato, ora sentieri e rovi.

Mykonos kept me less than 24 hours.
Yesterday afternoon I arrived in the biggest island of the Cyclades:
Naxos.

The welcoming is perfect: a great quite camping just in front of Plaka beach: westbound, good for sunsets, stunning sea, gentle wind.
I won’t fly away from here, I’d rather take it slow.

The plan for today is just discovering the closest beaches.
After some morning jogging and swimming I jump on my Brompton and start pedaling southwards,
following a dirt first and then a foreshore that bring me slowly to Orkos, surfers paradise.

I could stop there, but after the promontory the beach keeps going.
Like there is no end.

“Go on for a little while, reach that other promontor … it doesn’t look too far …“

Asphalt, sandy road, dirt, paths and bushes. Half of the time I can pedal, the other half I have to walk pushing the bicycle with hands.
A dive in Mikri Vigla, Kastràki, Glyfàdha, Alykò and Pyrgàki.
Here I feel tired and lay down for an hour.

When I decide to go back to the camping I find out it’s already mid afternoon.
A roadsign states Hora is 22 km away, northwards.
The camping is 6 km southbound from Hora.

Do the math fastly – “16 km to get till here? Only beaches for 16 km? That’s why I was feeling tired …” – and is like this I start realising how big Naxos really is.

But also how beautiful.
