A city that for many years was among my greatest curiosities and another whose name evoked in my mind only concepts like war and suffering.
I couldn’t believe they were both so beautiful.
Two gems in Bosnia Herzegovina: Mostar and Sarajevo.
21 June, Bosnia | Day 20 🇧🇦
But where in Bosnia?
Here’s a clue: this is Gianni (is his real name – I talked a bit with him), and in the last 20 years he has been jumping 8 times a day from a 25-meters-high bridge for 25 euros each time.
Those eyes which had seen bad things and now can just enjoy jumping.
So … where in Bosnia?
Everything, in Mostar, is around the bridge.
The very name of the city comes from the word “bridge”: Most, in Slavic.
“The Old Bridge” ( “Stari Most”) was built in the sixteenth century, commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
For several centuries it was protected by two towers, Helebija (northeast) and Tara (southwest) – called “mostari” (“the guardians”) – linking not just two sides of the city, but two worlds.
The West on one side, East on the other.
Muezzins and mosques on one side, Christians and churches on the other.
Bosnians on one side, Bosnians on the other.
In 1993, during the war, it was destroyed.
In 2004 it was rebuilt.
Today, near the bridge, you can do many things.
Chat and play cards.
Make thousands of photographs.
Bring a bicycle.
Hear the call to prayer from the minarets.
Beg for money.
And remain speechless.
22 June, Mostar | Day 21 🇧🇦
As I spent there another half day before changing destination, today’s post is again for Mostar.
Here you can see clearly:
▫One big white Cross
▫3 girls talking
▫5 birds flying
▫1 diver preparing to jump
▫The two Towers protecting it
▫A land which knew war
▫A beautiful place
And when the muezzin called, some unrevealed energy shivered my spine and made my lungs sing.
23 June, Bosnia | Day 22 🇧🇦
Red beard in another European capital … where am I?
Franz Ferdinand was killed here, and I’m not talking about the musicians 😊
24 June, Sarajevo | Day 23 🇧🇦
Someday I’ll write a better post about it.
For today – I’m still a bit shocked and tired – I just tell you this: if you ever get the chance, go to Sarajevo.
